Position Overview:
 
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a highly skilled accountant for our Deputy Controller position to support financial operations at our corporate location in Norfolk, VA. The Deputy Controller will play a pivotal role in our financial operations, with a primary focus on accurately tracking revenue recognition as well as supporting the formulation and implementation of internal controls, financial policy, and business plans. Additionally, the Deputy Controller will be responsible for various financial management tasks to ensure the fiscal health and efficiency of the organization.
 
Position works onsite and may require hours beyond a standard work week to support business operations.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  1. Financial Management:
    • Advises on business financial matters including strategic planning, review of project/contract financial data, business/financial risks, and problem identification/resolution.
    • Assists in the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls.
    • Conducts regular financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Prepares and review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
    • Monitors cash flow, budgets, and financial performance metrics to support decision-making processes.
    • Provides financial insights and recommendations to senior management based on analysis of financial data.
    • Performs/assists with audits and regulatory compliance requirements as needed.
    • Coordinates with and prepares reports for CFO, controller, and upper management.
    • With an understanding of Program Management, assist in budget development, variance analysis and contractually required reporting.
 
  1. General Accounting:
    • Oversee general ledger accounting activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
    • Review and analyze financial transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness.
    • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
    • Assist with the preparation of tax filings and other statutory reporting requirements.
    • Support Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions as needed.
    • Performs or assists with preparation of accounting information for internal and external review, analysis and/or audit. 
    • Analyze contracts and agreements to determine appropriate revenue recognition timing and methods.
    • Collaborate with project managers and other departments to gather necessary information for revenue recognition purposes.
    • Prepare/present revenue reports, forecasts, and business relative data for management review.
 
  1. Team Development & Collaboration:
    • Provides leadership/guidance to staff on relative financial matters and supports staff development.
    • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to streamline processes and improve efficiency within the finance department.
    • Fosters a culture of continuous improvement and excellence within the finance team.
 
Qualifications:
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and at least 5 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles.
  • Must have a CPA certification (CPA candidate may be considered with appropriate documentation).
  • Must have a strong understanding of revenue recognition principles, general accounting standards, as well as various accounting compliance regulations. 
  • Must have experience in government accounting, cost accounting, or equally relative experience supporting government contracting business.  Knowledge of FAR/DFAR accounting guidelines highly preferred.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems/programs.  Prior CostPoint experience highly preferred.
  • Must have excellent analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Must have commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding ethical standards in financial practices.
 
Physical Requirements:
  • Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Climb, Reach, Push and Pull, Stoop, Crawl, Kneel, Balance, Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
  • General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require standing and walking for up to 30% of the time.
  • Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Hear, talk, and smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available, but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
  • A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer.
