The April General Membership Meeting was held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel. The Guest Speaker was John Warren, Director, Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy.
Mr. Warren spoke to the membership about the potential for Offshore Wind off the intercontinental shelf of Virginia's coast. He reminded the audience that Virginia's coastline has many advantages for Offshore Wind development, and that the time to look and act on becoming a potential developer of these turbines is now, as the development begins in the Northeast and expands South toward Virginia.
Mr. Warren also stated that the more than 3,500 wind turbines planned for the Atlantic coastline will be expected to have 20 - 30 year lifespans, and will need to be maintained and repaired during that timeframe - a job that Virginia's existing ship repairers are well primed to accomplish.
