OSHA 10 Hour Maritime Industry Course (April 7-8)

The OSHA 10 Hour Maritime Industry course awards the 10-Hour certification card and meets all of the mandated regulations for the Maritime Industry (OSHA Code of Federal Regulations 29 CFR 1915) course in a format that specifically addresses the challenges and environmental conditions specific to the shipyards. In addition, shipyard specific regulations and issues are covered in depth. Instructors are authorized by OSHA endorsed certification programs. Cards are issued through the Instructor's certifying body. All book, material and certification costs are covered in the course fee.

Workforce Development Committee Meeting

This meeting’s topic is 'The Shipfitter Trade Skill and its Importance to the Maritime Industry – A Look at Industry’s critical need and demand for the Shipfitter Trade Skill’. This meeting will include the following agenda: A Hampton Roads Workforce Council presentation and discussion concerning the regional maritime industry’s current and projected demand for Shipfitters – A valuable trade skill deemed highly crucial to the success of the ship building and ship repair companies of Hampton Roads. This revelation of the pressing demand will be followed by a presentation by Mr. Michael VanderWerf of the Tidewater Community College (TCC) Skilled Trades Academy covering TCC’s establishment of a Shipfitter training and certification course of instruction, which in coordination with the Virginia Ship Repair Association’s (VSRA) Marine Trades Training (MTT) program, directly supports the region’s maritime industry. A follow-on presentation by Mr. Ron Richards of QED’s Training Center, will likewise provide information about QED’s ongoing efforts to standup a Shipfitter training and certification program, which will also be supported by VSRA’s MTT sponsorship. Following the three presentations, two Shipfitters employed by Colonna’s Shipyard will provide comments to the audience as to their respective experiences as Shipfitters working in the field of ship repair. At the conclusion of each presentation and talk, the representatives will field questions and provide answers of which the audience may have as to Shipfitter tradespersons, and the ongoing demand for Shipfitters across the ship repair and ship building domain.
