Safety Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY The Safety Coordinator will work to protect employee health and safety by making sure risks in the workplace are properly controlled. They will ensure compliance with all aspects of health and safety laws. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and FUNCTIONS • Inspects equipment, tools, and working conditions to ensure safety of workers • Inspects safety belts, ladders, ropes, and tools and replaces those not meeting safety requirements • Observes crews at work and reports violations in safety precautions • Investigates accidents to determine causes and devises preventive measures • May instruct workers in use of safety equipment and safe work methods • Enforce safety rules and regulations • Conducts vessel, building and grounds surveys on periodic and regular basis to detect code violations, hazards, and incorrect work practices and procedures • Ensuring workers are provided with suitable protective equipment, such as eye goggles, ear protectors or appropriate types of gloves and clothing • Keeping up to date with new legislation and health and safety standards • Conduct Daily Safety Walk-Through Inspections with Shipyard Safety Inspectors • Writing Daily Safety reports on results of inspections and investigations and completing detailed paperwork • Providing training and educational support to employers and new/trainee employees • Prepares various safety and mishap reports • Maintain occupational health and safety training matrix • Performs administrative and record-keeping functions in support of the safety organization for the company • Understand and act upon instruction • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator • Work independently to complete responsibilities • Must have regular, reliable attendance • Other duties as assigned * The specific statements shown in each section of this description are not intended to be all inclusive. QUALIFICATIONS • Demonstrated knowledge of Federal safety regulations and job safety analysis required. • Experience with behavior-based safety processes preferred. • Minimum of 5 years industrial operations experience • HAZMAT, CPR, and First Aid Training • 10-HR OSHA Certified • VSRA Permit Authorized Individual (PAI) Certified • Maritime Trade experience preferred • Maritime rules and regulations: OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI, EPA and State and Local regulations • Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner • Effective interpersonal skills dealing with people at various levels and in a variety of functions • Experience with Microsoft Office products • Knowledge of NAVSEA/MSC/USCG Standard Items preferred. • Must have reliable transportation, maintain a current valid driver’s license with a record that allows the operation of company vehicles. • Knowledge of NAVSEA/MSC/USCG Standard Items preferred. • Must have reliable transportation, maintain a current valid driver’s license with a record that allows the operation of company vehicles REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS STATEMENT To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform the essential job duties satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to the safety or health of employee or others. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to heavy machinery, heights, noise, dust, dirt, fumes, gases, smoke, and confined spaces. There will be an exposure to extreme weather conditions. A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer. Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and onboard marine vessels.
