The path to a shipyard career often begins with a position as a Firewatch, Trade Helper or Apprentice. Apprentice programs are rigorous and workers are often more successful if they begin in an entry-level position first to obtain some key critical skills and knowledge such as:
- Learning the words and terms used in shipyards that aren't used in other workplaces
- Learning about basic tools and their proper use
- Learning about the variety of trades jobs available so the worker can choose a position best suited to their interests
Education
These occupations usually require a high school diploma.

Job Training: Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
Qualifications
Candidates must have 6-8 years of experience in their trade for first class tradesmen positions.

Entry-level jobs require a minimum of 6-12 months experience working in a shipyard environment.
