Outside Machinist 1st Class

Summary:

Under limited supervision, installs new machines or heavy equipment according to layout plans, blueprints, or other drawings, and dismantles and installs machines or heavy equipment when changes in the plant layout are required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Replaces defective parts of machine or adjusts clearances and alignment of moving parts.

• Align machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and various electrical/electronic equipment.

• Connects power unit to machines or steam piping to equipment, and test unit to evaluate its mechanical operation.

• Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment.

• Assembles and installs equipment, using hand tools and power tools.

• Positions steel beams to support bedplates of machines and equipment, using blueprints and schematic drawings, to determine work procedures.

• Signals crane operator to lower basic assembly units to bedplate and align unit to centerline.

• Inserts shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments, to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.

• Moves machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, and trucks.

• Attaches moving parts and subassemblies to basic assembly unit, using hand tools and power tools.

• Supports other trades as required to include assisting in rigging, disassembly, reassembly and inspection of mechanical and electrical equipment, systems, and components.

 

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma/equivalent.

• More than 5 years related work experience.

• Training involves both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.

• Mechanical aptitude and skills.

• Active listening, effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

• Ability to read, interpret layouts, blueprints, and other technical specifications.

• Able to read, hear, and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

This position is performed in a traditional shipyard environment with local travel between facilities and project locations as required.

Occasional travel outside of the local area may also be required in support of customers, vendors, suppliers, and other team members.
Both overtime and the remote possibility for shiftwork exist.

An outside machinist installs and repairs equipment, sets up and handles manufacturing machinery and ensures that production equipment is adequate and functional. The machinist also operates machines manually or through control mechanisms, inspects equipment and materials and communicates with co-workers, subordinates and superiors.

An Outside Machinist's typical duties include:
- Disassembling or dismantling valves or pumps, inspecting for wear and assessing replacement need, then re-assembling
- Installing stanchions and hand rails for gratings and ladders
- Installing piping for steam, exhaust, suction, discharge, heating, and/or refrigeration
- Dismantling, inspecting and repairing deck machinery, main engines, generator governors, and/or turbines
- Running horizontal and vertical lines for alignment of engines
- Overhauling and repairing refrigerating machinery
Education
Most outside machinist careers require a high school diploma, as well as training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, and/or an associate's degree.

Outside machinists usually need one or two years of on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be available.
Qualifications
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is typically required. Outside Machinists generally have a broad background in diesel repair and maintenance.
