Shipyard Staffing is currently hiring for Red Badge Riggers for work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. Requirements: Must have a FULLY ADJUDICATED CLEARANCE AT THE SECRET LEVEL OR HIGHER Must be a US Citizen Job Description: The Rigger contractor employee shall have sufficient knowledge of the common and most typical operations of rigging on U.S. Naval Surface Ship and Submarine platforms. The Rigger contractor employee shall be capable of the installation, removal, and repositioning of machinery, structural members of ships or buildings, heavy equipment or other loads. The Rigger contractor employee shall also be capable of maneuvering loads, bracing, cushioning, preparing, and attaching lifting gear; and installing, beam clamps, and other supporting structures. The Rigger contractor employee shall be capable of estimating weights and center of gravity of loads to be moved; this process involves planning weight distribution, maneuvering the load and attaching the appropriate lifting gear which includes, but is not limited to; chain falls, shackles, chain hoists, synthetic slings, 2” flat nylon strap in single, double or triple ply, beam clamps and wire rope. The Rigger contractor employee uses complex multipoint suspension techniques to maneuver loads and move objects in confined areas. The Rigger contractor employee shall have knowledge and ability to use proper rigging practices, and safety factors of rigging equipment. The Rigger contractor employee shall have ability to control the movements of various heavy or large pieces of equipment through narrow passages, instructs helpers and workers in proper and safe rigging practices. Shipyard Riggers assemble and install rigging gear such as cables, ropes, pulleys and winches to lift, lower, move or position machinery, structural steel and other heavy objects. They use weight handling equipment such as fork trucks, cranes, wire ropes (all types), end fittings, slings, winches, chain falls, boat slings, boat davits, and horizontal and verticals pad-eyes. The experienced Rigger will normally be able to perform all the following tasks: examine objects to be moved, estimate their size, shape and weight and decide on the type of equipment necessary; erect a temporary jib or derrick if required, and install cables, pulleys and other tackle; choose or make slinging equipment and attach it to the load; erect cranes and mobile crane booms, increase the height of tower cranes by bolting component parts in place, and rigging cables; splice ropes and cables to make slings and tackle; erect structural steel for buildings under construction; erect panels used on facades; and inspect, maintain and repair equipment of trade.
Education
A career as a rigger typically requires a high school diploma, and anywhere from a few months to one year of experience working with the required tools and skills, particularly in a marine environment. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
Qualifications
Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is usually required.
