Purpose:
 
Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Mechanic to support docking operations at our site in Norfolk, VA. 
 
Job Description:
  • Able to accomplish all duties of lowerclassmen
  • Ability to lead small group of personnel to complete task with minimal supervision
  • Able and willing to teach and instruct lower classman various tasks
  • Proficiency in all aspects of blocking and hauling a vessel
  • Builds keel and bilge blocks, cradles, and shoring for supporting ships in dry docks, marine railways, shipways, or building docks
  • Lead personnel in reconfiguration of travel lift straps when necessary
  • Proficient in all aspects of reading and laying out of Blocking Plans
  • Preparation and accomplishment of blocking inspections
  • Positions and secures blocking and other structures on dock platform, according to ship's blueprints.
  • Must be proficient in crane safety and hand signals
  • Supervising of the aligning of vessels over blocks
  • Ability to Moor vessels using heavy weather mooring plan without supervision
  • Basic shifting of shipyard equipment in yard
  • Qualified to operate the following equipment:
    • Tug Boats
    • Small Boat
    • Band saws
    • Table Saw
    • Burning torch
  • Proficient in all chainsaw operations (block removal, cutting rubber, Cutting lumber to government specs)
  • Perform maintenance piers and bulk heads with instruction
  • Must be familiar with the working knowledge and operation of hauling equipment
  • Cut, construct, and plane shaped bilge blocks
  • Proficient and professional with VHF communication
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance
Qualifications:
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least five (5) years of maritime experience in a trade.
  • Must be able to complete required technical training (Boater’s Operator, Band Saw, Table Saw, Burning Torch).
  • Must be proficient with hand/power tools.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be able to understand and act upon instruction.
  • Must be able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior shipyard and/or docking experience preferred.
  • Experience operating small boats preferred.
  • Carpentry experience preferred. 
  • Technical training preferred.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
