Position: Planner
Location: Norfolk, VA
Shift: 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM (with an hour lunch)

Pay Rate: $30.00 per hour
Position Overview
Hutco, Inc. is seeking an experienced Planner to join our Planning Department in Norfolk, Virginia. This role requires expertise in developing and managing work specifications, change orders, and planning documentation in a naval ship repair environment. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background and familiarity with government standards, shipboard systems, and maintenance databases.
Essential Functions
- Provide accurate work specifications and change orders aligned with government guidelines and standards using Work Notifications (WN), drawings, and technical documents.
- Conduct ship-checks to verify work requirements and create NMD availabilities and Work Specification Items.
- Develop, issue, and distribute planning documents, procedures, and work items while ensuring compliance with directives and instructions.
- Integrate and validate planning processes with government affiliations and key parties through weekly reviews.
- Collaborate with Estimators and Schedulers to produce an integrated planning schedule.
- Prepare advanced planning reports for government processing and conduct meetings to update key personnel on planning progress.
Position Demands
Education/Training:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field; OR
- Associate degree plus two (2) years of directly related experience; OR
- Six (6) years of directly related experience.
Required Experience:
- Familiarity with navy ship repair environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- Expertise in reading drawings, blueprints, standard items, and work specifications.
- Working knowledge of Navy Maintenance Database (NMD) Planning and Execution Modules.
- Strong ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and resolve planning conflicts.
Working Relationships
Reports directly to the Planning Manager and interfaces with Trades, Production Management, Estimating, Scheduling, Supply Chain Management, Contracts, and government customers. While priorities are determined by the supervisor, the Planner has the autonomy to schedule tasks within provided guidelines. This position does not have direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and revise planning documents, procedures, and work items.
- Conduct ship-checks to verify and validate work requirements.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure planning compliance.
- Provide weekly updates and advanced planning reports to government entities.
- Collaborate with scheduling and estimating teams for integrated planning efforts.
- Support special projects and availabilities with accurate and complete work specifications.
Accountability
This role is accountable for producing high-quality, accurate planning documents and ensuring all planning activities are conducted in compliance with government and company standards.
Additional Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen and qualify for a Common Access Card (CAC) and a security clearance.
- Willingness to travel and reliable transportation.
- Ability to work overtime as needed and maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Must be capable of working in environments that may be dirty, dusty, hot, cold, or noisy.
- Familiarity with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for shipyard environments.
