Rate of Pay: $27.31 per hour
 

DESCRIPTION:

Hutco, Inc. is seeking an Outside Machinist with 20 years of turbine generator experience to work on various shipbuilding and repair projects. This position requires in-depth knowledge of turbine generators and associated systems and equipment. The machinist will be responsible for performing installations, repairs, and testing on steam turbines, pumps, valves, and other critical systems aboard ships.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 20 years of turbine generator experience.
  • Extensive knowledge in installation, maintenance, and overhaul of mechanical systems, including turbines, generators, valves, and pumps.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and shipbuilding industry standards.

RECOMMENDED SKILLS:

  1. Drawings and Blueprints: Ability to comprehend complex drawings, blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
  2. Ship Systems: Working knowledge of shipbuilding terms, systems, and nomenclature.
  3. Precision Tools: Skilled in the use of lapping and blue-checking tools, micrometers, and precision instruments.
  4. Installation and Repair: Experience in installing main engine, propulsion plant machinery, valves, sea valves, and hydraulic components.
  5. Testing and Overhaul: Experience in valve overhauls (steam and wog), hydrostatic testing, and system grooming.
  6. Machinery Operation: Ability to operate lathe, boring bar, portable milling machines, centrifugal pumps, and other machinery.
  7. Alignment: Proficiency in optical alignment, pump/motor installation, shafting, bearing work, and flange makeup.
  8. Specialized Equipment: Knowledge in operating equipment such as anchor windlass, mast and antenna installations, and aircraft elevator systems.
  9. System Cleanliness: Familiar with cleanliness grades for systems, including lube oil flushing and air conditioning hydro testing.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical Demands: The job is physically demanding, requiring work in extreme temperature and humidity conditions.
  • Tools and Machinery: Ability to operate heavy machinery such as boring bars, cargo cranes, and centrifugal pumps, and perform tasks like drilling, tapping, and flange makeup.

An outside machinist installs and repairs equipment, sets up and handles manufacturing machinery and ensures that production equipment is adequate and functional. The machinist also operates machines manually or through control mechanisms, inspects equipment and materials and communicates with co-workers, subordinates and superiors.

An Outside Machinist's typical duties include:
- Disassembling or dismantling valves or pumps, inspecting for wear and assessing replacement need, then re-assembling
- Installing stanchions and hand rails for gratings and ladders
- Installing piping for steam, exhaust, suction, discharge, heating, and/or refrigeration
- Dismantling, inspecting and repairing deck machinery, main engines, generator governors, and/or turbines
- Running horizontal and vertical lines for alignment of engines
- Overhauling and repairing refrigerating machinery
Education
Most outside machinist careers require a high school diploma, as well as training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, and/or an associate's degree.

Outside machinists usually need one or two years of on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be available.
Qualifications
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is typically required. Outside Machinists generally have a broad background in diesel repair and maintenance.
