Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Small Boat Mechanic to join our team, specializing in the maintenance, repair, and installation of marine engines, propulsion systems, and mechanical components on small vessels. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience working with outboard, inboard, and sterndrive engines, as well as hull and mechanical systems, ensuring vessels operate safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and repair outboard, inboard, and sterndrive engines from major manufacturers (Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Oxe, etc.).
- Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, fuel system cleaning, and cooling system flushes.
- Troubleshoot and repair fuel, electrical, and ignition systems to ensure optimal engine performance.
- Install and service steering systems, throttle controls, trim and tilt mechanisms, and propulsion systems.
- Inspect, repair, and maintain hull mechanical systems, such as bilge pumps, live wells, trim tabs, and hydraulic systems.
- Conduct engine diagnostics using specialized tools and software to identify issues and recommend solutions.
- Install and test new mechanical components and perform sea trials to verify system performance.
- Perform propeller maintenance, shaft alignment, and stern gear repairs.
- Keep accurate records of work performed, parts used, and customer communications.
- Adhere to safety protocols and environmental regulations in all repair and maintenance activities.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Proven experience as a marine mechanic, preferably with small boats (up to 50 feet).
- Strong knowledge of marine engines, propulsion systems, and mechanical troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with engine diagnostic tools and software (e.g., Yamaha Diagnostic System, Mercury CDS, Volvo Vodia).
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and specialized marine equipment.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and in team environments, with good communication skills.
- Capable of lifting 50+ lbs, working in confined spaces, and performing tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification from ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) or major engine manufacturers.
- Experience with hydraulic systems, marine HVAC, and electrical systems is a plus.
- Knowledge of fiberglass repair and marine plumbing is beneficial.
- Commercial boating or shipyard experience is advantageous.
