Safety Inspector/Shipyard Competent Person (SCP)
JOB SUMMARY:
Coordinates with government officials, contractors, subcontractors, and customers and inspects maritime work sites to ensure compliance with federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations as well as Company policies and procedures. Completes Safety and Environmental Discrepancy reports and ensure correction of discrepancies. Provides basic deck plate safety related training to contractors and sub-contractors when appropriate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates with government officials on occasion, contractors, subcontractors and customers to ensure that safety and environmental requirements are met. Inspects industrial work sites to ensure compliance with federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations as well as company policies and procedures.
- Submits Safety or Environmental reports as required. Identifies what materials and personnel are needed to correct safety or environmental deficiencies.
- Makes recommendations to the Environmental, Health and Safety Manager regarding the development and implementation of safety and environmental policies and procedures.
- Continuously perform safety oversite on Company employees when required.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor and Safety Manager
- Expected to be or become trained as a Shipyard Competent Person and designated by Company to perform SCP duties. Training (classroom and on the job) can be provided by the Company.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Good working knowledge of OSHA Regulations, and NAVSEA Standard Items or willing to learn
- Have worked within the maritime industry and be familiar with maritime terminology.
- Be able to direct others, to include Firewatches and Managers and enforce regulations even if it requires work stoppage.
- Must be able to work independently, Must be at scheduled work everyday
- Requires excellent communication skills. (Prior training experience preferred but not required.)
