We are pleased to share the resounding success of the 27th Annual Safety & Health Seminar, held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, Chartway Arena, ODU. This achievement was made possible through the tireless dedication of the 15-member Safety Seminar planning committee. The seminar garnered an impressive attendance of 304 participants.
We are delighted to report that 214 registrants, representing more than 56 VSRA member companies, eagerly joined us for this event. We wish to express our profound gratitude to the 44 companies that generously sponsored this seminar; without your support, this exceptional gathering would not have been possible.
Our heartfelt appreciation extends to the 16 keynote speakers and presenters whose insightful presentations furnished attendees with invaluable insights into safety within the ship repair industry. Each speaker eloquently emphasized the importance of this year's safety theme, "Picture Safety at Every Step"
Highlights from the seminar's agenda included an engaging opening keynote by CDR Frank Weisser, USN, Ret., Blue Angels Lead Solo Pilot and Top Gun: Maverick Stunt Pilot. CDR Weisser shared his experiences "Behind the Scenes of Top Gun: Maverick" and discussed "Mitigating Risk in the Most Dynamic Environments." Other key topics covered encompassed "Investing In You: Employee Development & Retention," "Practical Strategies for Deckplate Leadership," "Near Miss: Recognition & Reporting," "Affordable Immersive Training Technology," "Confined Spaces," "Heat Injury," a "Fall Protection DEMO," a "Scaffolding DEMO," and "Respiratory Protection Awareness."
During the seminar's lunch session, attendees were captivated by a powerful safety video presentation that left a lasting impact. In addition, the event featured a lively “Jeopardy” game and numerous raffle prize drawing, adding an element of excitement and engagement.
As we reflect on this remarkable seminar, we are already setting our sights on the 28th Annual Safety & Health Seminar planned for next year.
