2024 Tradesperson of the Year Nominees
The 18th Annual Tradesperson of the Year Awards was celebrated on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, during the VSRA General Membership Luncheon Meeting at the Waterside Marriott. Each year, this prestigious event recognizes the “best of the best” in ship repair, honoring individuals who demonstrate exceptional skill, dedication, and service to their trade and community.
This year, 32 exceptional tradespersons were nominated—18 Senior and 14 Junior—showcasing the immense talent and dedication across the ship repair industry. After a thorough review by our panel of industry-expert judges, we are thrilled to announce this year’s winners and runners-up.
2024 Senior Tradesperson of the Year
Thomas Clark, Jr., Técnico Corporation
With over 15 years of experience, Thomas has risen through the ranks from an entry-level helper to a highly respected Pipefitter Supervisor. Known for his expertise in overseeing complex installations and repairs, Thomas also prioritizes mentorship, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of skilled tradespeople. His calm leadership, commitment to safety, and dedication to excellence make him a role model both on and off the job. Outside of work, Thomas gives back to his community by coaching youth sports, volunteering for local initiatives, and demonstrating the importance of balancing career, family, and service. 2024 Junior Tradesperson of the Year
Jahlani Williams, Técnico Corporation
Starting as a sheet metal mechanic, Jahlani’s drive for growth has led him to gain proficiency in welding and ship fitting, becoming a versatile and invaluable team member. Jahlani’s commitment to safety and environmental stewardship sets an outstanding example for apprentices and coworkers alike. Beyond the workplace, he serves as a mentor in his community, exemplifying leadership and passion for his craft. Congratulations, Jahlani, on this incredible achievement!
Runners-Up
Senior Runner-Up: William Thigpen, VTG
William’s rapid career advancement to Engineer Technician III reflects his commitment to technical excellence and professional growth. He is a leader in safety, implementing initiatives that have significantly reduced incidents. Beyond his technical contributions, William supports veterans in the ship repair industry through career fairs and educational workshops, exemplifying his dedication to his profession and community.
Junior Runner-Up: Shana Anderson, General Dynamics-NASSCO Norfolk
Shana has demonstrated remarkable growth, advancing to Level 3 Sheet Metal Mechanic in just four years. Her innovative contributions, including process improvements that enhance efficiency and safety, highlight her technical expertise and dedication. Outside of work, Shana is a devoted parent, active in her children's school activities, and a primary caregiver for her elderly mother, balancing her professional and personal responsibilities with kindness and a positive attitude.
