Committee Updates

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee met on May 17, 2012 to review the June Newsletter.  The committee invites anyone interested in participating to join them at the next meeting. The committee meets the Thursday following the General Membership Luncheon meeting at 9:00 a.m. at QED Systems, Inc. at 4646 N. Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. The next meeting will be on June 21, 2012.

 

Contracts Committee

The Contracts Committee met on May 3, 2012.  The contracts committee is setting their schedule for the 2012 seminar series. The Schedule is as follows:

August:  Standards of Conduct which will be lead by Pat O’Donnell and Bill Dozier

Sept:  Protests and Claims which will be lead by Dan Weckstein and Terry Murphy

Oct:  Subcontractor issues and hot topics which will be lead by Kevin Cosgrove

Nov:  Government Contracting Alphabet Soup – ORCA to FAPIIS which will be led by Jeff Estes and Mike Gardner

We expect to publish the exact dates and locations in June.  The Contracts committee meets the 1st Thursday of every month at the Norfolk offices of Troutman Sanders, Sixteenth Floor, 150 West Main Street, Norfolk, Virginia. The next committee meeting will be on June 7, 2012.

 

Environmental Committee

The Environmental Committee met on May 10, 2012. The committee discussed the following topics:  The Pier Side Environmental newsletter available from Naval Station Norfolk.  EPA being pressure by Environmental Groups in a Lawsuit to classify Coal Ash, which we know as Black Beauty abrasive blast grit, as a Hazardous Material. Currently EPA classifies this as non-hazardous. This could result in significant increased disposal costs for shipyards.  EECATS – Last year there was a short lived push for contractors to complete the on-line Environmental training on EECATS. Currently there is a module for Pierside work at Naval Station Norfolk being offered. It may be worthwhile for company representatives working at Naval Station Norfolk  to complete this training.  Virginia DEQ HAS recently begun to study closely Marine coatings VOC Data supplied by manufacturers. Preliminary findings indicate that the supplied data may be outdated and incorrect. Manufacturers are being contacted and updated data should be available soon.  The committee meets the second Thursday of the odd numbered months at 10:00 a.m. in the United Coatings Corp. Training Room, 650 Chautauqua Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23707. The next meeting will be on July 12, 2012.

 

Human Resources Committee

The Human Resource Committee did not meet for its regularly scheduled committee meeting on May 2, 2012 due to the Human Resources Seminar held on Wednesday, April 25, 2012.  The next regularly scheduled committee meeting will be at the Norfolk offices of Wilcox & Savage – 22nd Floor, 440 Monticello Avenue, Suite 2200, Norfolk, Virginia, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 6, 2012.

 

Quality Assurance Committee

The Quality Assurance Committee did not meet in May.  The committee meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at Q.E.D. Systems, Inc., 4646 North Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 12, 2012.

 

Safety Committee

The Safety Committee met on Thursday, May 20, 2012.  The 2012 17th Annual Safety & Health Seminar is scheduled for September 26, 2012 at the Ted Constant Convention Center at ODU. This year’s theme is “Safety Begins with You – Make it Personal.”  Members are encouraged to register early to reserve their seating since there is a maximum attendance of "200" participants. Sponsors for the Safety & Health Seminar are still needed. The committee meets the second Thursday of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the United Coatings Corp. Training Room, 650 Chautauqua Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23707. The next meeting is on June 14, 2012.

 

Security Committee

The Security Committee met on May 8, 2012.  The committee meets the second Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. in the United Coatings Corp. Training Room, 650 Chautauqua Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23707. The next meeting is on June 12, 2012.

 

Worker’s Comp Committee

The Worker’s Comp Committee did not meet in May.  The committee meets the second Thursday of the even numbered months at 10:00 a.m. in the United Coatings Corp. Training Room, 650 Chautauqua Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23707. The next meeting is on June 14, 2012.

 

VSRF

The Virginia Ship Repair Foundation met on May 9, 2012.  Lego competition came to a successful conclusion with Rosemont, Blair and Mary Paige as the winning Middle Schools.  This marks our first winner from the Peninsula.  Our partnership with Norfolk Technical Center was reviewed and both sides are pleased with the progress being made to illuminate career possibilities in the Marine Trades.  Online Nomenclature Course and Compartments Course will be rolled out this summer.  We have an immediate opening for a new board member and anyone interested can contact the office or Frank Jemmison for details.
