JUNE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Our guest speaker for the June 19th General Membership meeting will be Captain Mary M. Jackson, USN, Commanding Officer, Norfolk Naval Station.  Captain Jackson was born in Spain and spent most of her childhood in Saudi Arabia. She graduated from the Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with an emphasis in Oceanography.

 

Captain Jackson’s initial sea tour was as Assistant Operations Officer and Navigator in USS WILLAMETTE (AO 180) stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from December 1988 to December 1991. As a Department Head, she served in Norfolk, Virginia as Operations Officer in USS BRISCOE (DD 977) from October 1994 to November 1996 and in USS VELLA GULF (CG 72) from March 1997 to September 1998. Captain Jackson served as Executive Officer in USS STOUT (DDG 55) from November 2001 to February 2003. Captain Jackson has deployed to the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Arabian Gulf, Black Sea, and Baltic Sea. Captain Jackson’s most recent sea tour was in command of USS McFAUL (DDG 74) from June 2006 until November 2007.

 

Ashore, Captain Jackson was assigned to the U. S. Naval Academy from January 1992 to January 1994 where she served as an instructor in the Department of Seamanship and Navigation. From September 1998 to July 2001, she served as Theater Air and Missile Defense Officer to U. S. Joint Forces Command. From February 2003 to January 2006, she was assigned to Naval Surface Forces, Atlantic Fleet where she served as Force Officer Programs and subsequently as Flag Secretary. From December 2007 to April 2009, Captain Jackson was assigned as Head, Surface Junior Officer Assignments (PERS 412) at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee. She reported to Naval Station Norfolk, as Executive Officer, in April 2009 and assumed the duties as Commanding Officer in August 2010.

 

Captain Jackson earned a Masters of Engineering Management degree from George Washington University in December 1993. In addition to various service and unit awards, Captain Jackson’s medals include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards).
